Parking in Avignon 2026: a local's honest guide

Parking in Avignon: what the guidebooks won’t tell you

Looking for a spot in central Avignon on a Saturday in July is an extreme sport. After eight years living and hosting travelers in the Quartier des Teinturiers, we’ve seen every mistake—and found every workaround. Here’s the frank guide we wish we’d read before moving here.

Free parking: your two best options

Île de la Barthelasse: the locals’ secret

The large free parking lot on Île de la Barthelasse remains the favorite of Avignon residents. Cross pont Daladier (from porte de l’Oulle), turn left after the bridge, and you’ll find several hundred dirt-surface spaces. In 5-7 minutes on foot, you’re at porte de l’Oulle, and in 10 minutes at the Palais des Papes. In summer, arrive before 10 AM or after 6 PM to find shade under the plane trees. No time limit, no ticket, no stress.

Only downside: dusty ground in summer, muddy after rain. But for a multi-day stay, it’s unbeatable. We often advise our guests to unload luggage near our apartments (we’ll show you where), then go park on the island for the duration of the stay.

P+R Les Italiens: parking + shuttle

Avignon Nord exit off the A7, the P+R Les Italiens offers free parking and free shuttle to the center (stop at TGV station, then downtown) every 15 minutes during the day, every 30 minutes in the evening. Reduced frequency on Sundays. The shuttle drops you near the bus station, a 12-minute walk from place de l’Horloge.

It’s perfect if you’re arriving via the highway and don’t want to navigate the narrow intra-muros streets. The lot is monitored, well-lit, and shuttles are punctual. However, last departure around 8:30 PM on weekdays: if you dine late, plan for a taxi back (around €12-15 to the lot).

Palais des Papes, Les Halles, Oratoire

The three main underground lots intra-muros cost around €3.50-4 per hour and €25-35 for 24 hours in 2026. Palais des Papes lot (place du Palais) is the most central but also the priciest and often full in high season. Les Halles lot (rue Philonarde) is 5 minutes’ walk from the Palais, slightly less saturated. Oratoire lot (rue Paul Sain) serves the Quartier des Teinturiers and rue des Teinturiers well.

Our take: these lots are handy for unloading luggage or a few-hour visit, but ruinous for a 3-4 day stay. If you’re staying with us, we advise dropping your things (“quick stop” parking tolerated 10-15 min on rue des Teinturiers early morning or evening), then parking for free on the island.

Private online parking: Yespark, Zenpark, Onepark

Since 2024, several platforms let you book residents’ parking spaces by the day or month. Expect €10-15 per day for a covered spot intra-muros, sometimes with 24/7 access. It’s worthwhile if you’re staying a week and want the security of a gated lot. Book ahead: spaces sell out fast during the Avignon Festival (July).

Blue zones: free but limited (and monitored)

Blue zones (blue markings on the ground) dot the center: rue de la République, boulevard Raspail, avenue Monclar, a few stretches near the train station. Free parking with mandatory European disc, limited to 2 hours, Monday to Saturday 9 AM-12 PM and 2-7 PM. Sunday and holidays: free parking without limit.

The trap: checks are frequent and fines come fast (€17 without disc, €35 if over time). If you don’t have a disc, buy one at any tobacco shop (around €2). Blue zones are handy for a quick errand or lunch, not for a full day. And don’t count on finding a spot between 11 AM and 3 PM in summer.

Traps to absolutely avoid

Reserved spots and prohibitions

Reserved spaces (deliveries, disabled, taxis, two-wheelers) are heavily monitored. Towing + fine = around €150-200 in 2026. Narrow intra-muros streets without ground markings are often no-parking: trust the signs, not the absence of a yellow line.

Also avoid parking “just 5 minutes” in front of a carriage entrance: residents call the municipal police without hesitation, and tow trucks arrive quickly. We’ve seen cars towed in 20 minutes on a Saturday morning.

Parking meters and payment

Since 2025, all Avignon meters accept contactless bank cards and the Flowbird app (mobile payment). But machines sometimes break down, especially after a storm. Keep €5-10 in coins in the glove box. And note your license plate: the Flowbird app lets you extend remotely if you’re running late, but only if you’ve already paid once.

The “Parking Full” myth

The electronic “Parking Full” signs at underground lot entrances are sometimes outdated (faulty sensors). If you see “full” at Palais des Papes, try anyway: you often find 2-3 spaces on level -2. Or check the Flowbird app in real time, which displays available spaces per lot.

Our practical tips for a stress-free stay

Arrival and luggage drop-off

When you book with us, we send you a detailed map with the simplest route based on your arrival time. Generally: enter via porte de l’Oulle (GPS: “Parking Île de la Barthelasse”), follow the quays to rue des Teinturiers, drop your luggage in front of the building (we’ll be waiting), then go park on the island (5 min by car). You walk back in 7 minutes via pont Daladier.

If you arrive on a market day (Saturday morning place des Carmes, Tuesday-Sunday morning at Les Halles), avoid the center between 8 AM and 1 PM: blocked traffic, deliveries, crowds. Aim for an arrival after 2 PM or in the evening.

Visiting Avignon without a car

Once parked, forget the car. Avignon intra-muros is walkable: 20 minutes from porte de l’Oulle to the Pont d’Avignon, 15 minutes from the Palais to place de l’Horloge. To explore the Luberon, the Alpilles, or the lavender fields, rent a car for the day (agencies near the TGV station) or take an organized tour. But in the center, walking is faster—and more pleasant—than hunting for a spot.

Long-term parking (a week or more)

If you’re staying a week, three options: (1) Île de la Barthelasse free (but exposed to weather), (2) private lot booked online (€10-15/day, secure), (3) P+R Les Italiens free (but distant, shuttle limited in the evening). We often recommend option 2 to guests renting Lavande Dorée for a week: peace of mind, 24/7 access, and you can leave for excursions whenever you want.

Alternatives: bike, scooter, public transport

Avignon has a TCRA bus network (€1.40 per ticket in 2026, day pass €4) and Vélopop’ bike-share (1-day subscription: €1.50, then 30 min free per trip). Bike lanes are expanding, especially along the ramparts and toward Île de la Barthelasse. If you’re staying intra-muros and planning excursions in the Luberon, renting an e-bike for the day (€25-35 from several shops) is a charming and eco-friendly option.

Electric scooters for hire (Lime, Dott) are present but regulated: no riding on sidewalks, speed limited to 20 km/h, parking only in designated zones. Handy for reaching the TGV station from the center (10 min), less so for visiting the cobbled alleys of the Quartier des Teinturiers.

In summary: our proven strategy

Here’s what we do ourselves and advise our guests:

  1. Arrival: GPS to “Parking Île de la Barthelasse,” cross pont Daladier, scout the area. Drive back to the center (porte de l’Oulle), drop luggage on rue des Teinturiers (we’ll help), then return to park for free on the island.
  2. Stay: forget the car. Walk, grab a coffee at place de l’Horloge, visit the Palais des Papes, wander the alleys. If you’re going on an excursion (Gordes, Roussillon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape), pick up the car in the morning (7-min walk to the island) and return in the evening.
  3. Departure: retrieve the car, come back to load luggage on rue des Teinturiers (“quick stop” parking tolerated 10 min early morning), and hit the road.

This method saves you €100-150 in parking over a 4-5 day stay, and spares you the stress of one-way streets and fines.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I park for free in Avignon in 2026? +

Île de la Barthelasse offers a large free parking lot accessible via pont Daladier, 5-7 minutes' walk from porte de l'Oulle. P+R Les Italiens (Avignon Nord exit) provides free parking + free shuttle to the center every 15 min during the day. Parking des Allées de l'Oulle (outside ramparts) is free but fills up fast in the morning.

How much do underground parking lots cost in central Avignon? +

In 2026, expect around €3-4 per hour and €25-35 per day for Palais des Papes, Les Halles, or Oratoire lots. The 24-hour rate varies by season: higher during the Festival (July). These lots are secure and convenient for dropping off luggage, but expensive for multi-day stays.

How do Avignon's blue zones work? +

Blue zones (blue markings on the ground) allow 2 hours of free parking with a mandatory European parking disc, Monday to Saturday 9 AM-12 PM and 2-7 PM. No disc = €17 fine. Sunday and holidays: free parking without limit. You'll find these zones on rue de la République, boulevard Raspail, avenue Monclar. Warning: frequent checks.

Can I park near the Palais des Papes? +

On-street parking around the Palais is almost nonexistent (delivery zones, taxis, or prohibited). The underground Palais des Papes lot (place du Palais) is closest but expensive. Alternative: Les Halles lot (5-min walk) or Oratoire. For a short visit, better to use a free P+R and walk 10 minutes.

What parking traps should I avoid in Avignon? +

Never park in reserved spots (deliveries, disabled, taxis): fine + towing is swift. Avoid narrow intra-muros streets without clear markings (often prohibited). Parking meters accept contactless cards since 2025, but keep coins as backup. Finally, 'Parking Full' signs on private lots sometimes show available spaces: check the Flowbird app in real time.

Should I rent a private parking space for a multi-day stay? +

If you're staying intra-muros and leaving the car parked, yes: around €10-15/day via platforms like Yespark or Zenpark (residents' spaces). Otherwise, P+R Les Italiens remains free with no time limit, and you can explore Avignon on foot. Our tip: arrive by car, unload near your lodging (we'll tell you where), then park for free for the duration of your stay.
